The
Crocodile Prize is Papua New Guinea’s national writing contest. It was
established in 2010 to encourage creative and critical writing in Papua
New Guinean and to provide Papua New Guineans with access to a
home-grown literature. A writing contest and a publishing program were
initiated in 2010 with the first awards made in 2011. The project is
managed by the Crocodile Prize Organisation.
You can help promote the Crocodile Prize by downloading and printing copies of
the flyer here and distributing them around your organisation, university, club, school, government agency or other institution.
What is the Crocodile Prize? The Crocodile Prize is Papua New Guinea’s
national writing contest open to any citizen of PNG.
It was established in 2010 to promote Papua New Guinean writing and to give grown literature.
The contest and related activities are managed by the Crocodile Prize Organisation, COG.
What awards are on offer?
In 2015 the contest offers six awards:
SHORT STORY. A fictional work of no more than
1,000 words on a theme of interest to a general readership.
ESSAY & JOURNALISM. A factual essay or article
of no more than 1,000 words on a theme of
interest to a general readership.
HERITAGE. A work of no more than 1,000 words
on a theme related to the culture, heritage and
traditions of PNG.
POETRY. Generally no more than 500 words on a
theme of interest to a general readership.
BOOK OF THE YEAR. A book (fiction or non-
fiction) published since 1 July 2014.
TOURISM, ARTS & CULTURE. An article or story on
a theme related to tourism in PNG, preferably
emphasising culture or the arts.
And how about the prizes?
In each category, there is a cash prize of K5,000,a Crocodile trophy, guaranteed publication and
free domestic travel and accommodation to the
Awards event at Kundiawa on 18-19 September.
